Description

Most folding electric bikes claim to be portable. Then you try carrying one through a station, down a flight of stairs, and onto a packed commuter train — and you realise that 25 kg and a 20-inch wheel doesn’t fold small enough to make it genuinely convenient. The Engwe Zip takes a different approach entirely.

At 16.9 kg with 16-inch wheels and a patented three-fold mechanism, it’s designed from the ground up around the moments when you’re not riding — carrying it, storing it, getting it onto public transport. Folded, it measures 619 × 739 × 350 mm — roughly the footprint of a carry-on suitcase. The patented single-side front fork design means it folds in about three seconds without any complicated sequence. This is the kind of portability that changes how you plan your commute — you stop worrying about where to lock it up and start bringing it with you.

A battery that works for you off the bike too

The 360 Wh LG battery is removable — take it with you to charge at your desk or to keep it secure when you’re parked up in a city. It supports PD 3.0 USB-C charging and discharging, which means it doubles as a power bank for your phone or laptop. Range is up to 120 km on the lowest assist level. In real-world commuting with higher assist, hills and stop-start traffic, expect significantly less — but for most urban commuters, a mid-week top-up will keep you going comfortably.

Small wheels, considered ride quality

16-inch wheels are smaller than the 20-inch folders you’ll find on most of our other folding e-bikes, and that’s the trade-off that makes the portability possible. Engwe compensate thoughtfully — 1.95-inch wide tyres specifically designed for e-bikes provide more grip and stability than standard 16-inch tyres, a suspension seatpost absorbs road vibration, and the torque sensor delivers smooth, proportional assist. The Shimano 7-speed drivetrain gives you manual control over gearing for routes with meaningful inclines. Hydraulic disc brakes provide confident stopping power in all conditions.

Ready to ride, straight from the box

The Zip arrives fully assembled — no tools, no setup, no afternoon spent following instructions. Unfold it and go. The steel frame adds natural vibration damping that benefits a compact bike on city roads, and the integrated front and rear lights with K-Mark certification mean you’re visible from the first ride without clipping anything on.

The Engwe Zip is a lightweight folding electric bike for people who actually fold their bike — every day, on the commute, in the real world. If portability is the thing you’d compromise everything else for, this is the one to look at.

Key Features

16.9 kg — 3-Second Patented Fold — Lighter and more compact than most 20-inch folders. Folds to suitcase dimensions (619 × 739 × 350 mm) via a patented single-side front fork design. Fast, repeatable folding without a complicated sequence — the kind of portability that makes train commuting genuinely practical.

360 Wh LG Battery — Removable + USB-C PD 3.0 — Take the battery with you for security or desk-charging. Charges and discharges via USB-C, so it doubles as a power bank for your phone or laptop. Up to 120 km range on lowest assist; real-world commuting range will be lower depending on terrain, assist level and conditions.

Torque Sensor + Suspension Seatpost — Smooth, proportional pedal assist that responds to your effort rather than just detecting pedal rotation. The suspension seatpost absorbs road vibration that 16-inch wheels would otherwise pass straight through — a thoughtful design choice for the smaller wheel size.

Shimano 7-Speed + Hydraulic Disc Brakes — Manual gearing for hills and varied terrain. Hydraulic brakes for confident stopping in all conditions. More control than single-speed or automatic alternatives — particularly useful on routes with any meaningful incline.

IPX5–IPX7 Waterproofing + Integrated Lights — Comprehensive weather protection across the bike (motor IPX5, display and lights IPX6, cabling IPX7). 30 lux K-Mark certified headlight and rear light included as standard. Ready for UK conditions year-round.

Electric Bike UK Laws

There are a few regulations surrounding electric bikes in the UK so we thought we would provide you with a summary of those below:

You must be aged 14 or over in the UK to ride an electric bike.

You do not need tax, insurance or a driving license to ride an electric bike.

To be classified as an electrically assisted pedal cycle (EAPC) in the UK, an electric bike must fulfil a certain set of criteria, including:

  • Pedals - The electric bike must have pedals capable of propelling it, and motor assistance should only be provided when the pedals are moving.
  • Motor - The motor’s power output must be no more than 250 watts (W).
  • Speed - The motor should not be able to propel the e-bike when it’s travelling faster than 15.5mph.

Please note that if your electric bike does not meet the above 3 points, then you cannot ride on public roads. Some of our bikes exceed the 250W limit, so these are only to be used on private land with the landowner's permission.

It is the responsibility of the rider to wear protective clothing, however this is not a legal requirement.
