Description

Here's the thing – most folding electric bikes make you pick a side. Either it’s light enough to lift onto a train but the battery fades halfway through the week, or it’s got proper range and comfort but folds down to something the size of a small sofa. The Engwe O20 Boost is one of the few folding electric bikes that genuinely refuses to make you choose, and that’s exactly why it’s worth a proper look.

It’s built around a real week, not a spec sheet. Monday to Friday it’s a sensible, road-legal commuter – proper torque-sensor assistance, hydraulic disc brakes and lights that actually meet UK standards. Come the weekend, the same bike has the range and the comfort to take you well past your usual streets. One bike doing two jobs, without the usual compromise tax.

A commuter that handles a real British week

The assistance comes from a 250W hub motor paired with a torque sensor, and if you’ve only ridden a cheaper cadence-sensor folder, the difference is obvious within the first thirty seconds. A torque sensor reads how hard you’re actually pushing and feeds in power to match, so pulling away at a junction or easing up a hill feels like your own legs – just with more in the tank. On top of that there’s a Boost function for the moments you want an extra shove, like setting off uphill with a week’s shopping on the rack. It all stays EAPC road-legal, with assistance tapering off at 15.5 mph, so there’s no licence, tax or insurance to worry about. With 75Nm of torque and a Shimano Altus 8-speed drivetrain underneath, the kind of climbs you’d find around Bristol or the edge of the Peak District stop feeling like a daily ordeal.

Range that actually earns its keep

This is where the O20 Boost pulls ahead of most folders. The 48V 15Ah (720Wh) battery is genuinely big for a bike this size, and Engwe quotes up to 141 km on the lowest assist, around 108 km in the middle, and 80 km flat out on the highest setting. As ever, treat those as best-case figures – your real number depends on the hills, the headwind, your weight and how much you lean on the assistance. But even halving the optimistic figure leaves you with a bike that’ll cover a week of commuting on a single charge, or a proper day out without a hint of range anxiety.

Folds for the hallway, the boot, or the camper

Folded, it comes down to 88 × 52.5 × 85 cm – small enough to live in a narrow hallway, slide into a car boot, or tuck beside the bed in a campervan rather than living out in a shed. I’ll be straight with you about the trade-off, though: at 26.5 kg this is a fold-and-store bike, not a fold-and-carry one. If your daily routine means lifting a bike through ticket barriers and onto a packed commuter train, a lighter folder will serve you better, and we’ve got guides covering exactly that. But if “folding” for you means freeing up floor space at home or throwing the bike in the back for a weekend away, the O20 Boost is right in its element.

Comfort for wet Tuesdays and long Saturdays

The step-through 6061 aluminium frame makes getting on and off easy whatever you’re wearing – a small thing until you’re doing it ten times a day. A hydraulic suspension fork with 50 mm of travel and adjustable lockout takes the sting out of potholes and dropped kerbs, and there’s an optional suspension seatpost if you want to soften the ride further. Stopping is handled by dual-piston hydraulic disc brakes on 160 mm rotors front and rear – proper reassurance in the wet – and the 20-inch anti-puncture tyres are built for British roads being what they are. Sensible touches round it off: a colour display with Bluetooth and app control, a centre kickstand, a 15 kg-rated rear rack, and Find My tracking for a bit of extra peace of mind.

Truth be told, the appeal of the Engwe O20 Boost is simple – it’s a folding electric bike that doesn’t ask you to give up range, comfort or road-legal everyday usability just to get the convenience of a fold. Whether it’s the commute, the weekend, or both, it covers the lot. Have a look and see if it fits the way you actually ride.

Key Features

Torque-sensor assist with Boost – A 250W hub motor and a true torque sensor read how hard you’re pedalling and match the power instantly, so assistance feels natural rather than like a switch flicking on and off. The Boost function adds an extra surge for setting off uphill or pulling away fully loaded.

720Wh battery, real-world range – The 48V 15Ah battery is large for a folder, with Engwe quoting up to 141 km on low assist and 80 km even on the highest setting. That’s a week of commuting or a full day out between charges, depending on terrain and how you ride.

Folds to 88 × 52.5 × 85 cm – Small enough to store in a hallway, drop in a car boot, or take in a campervan. At 26.5 kg it’s a folding electric bike built for fold-and-store convenience rather than carrying through stations, so it suits riders short on home storage more than daily train-luggers.

Shimano 8-speed and 75Nm of torque – A Shimano Altus 8-speed drivetrain paired with strong torque means hills and headwinds are far less of an event. You’ve got proper gears to spin up climbs and stretch your range on the flat.

Hydraulic disc brakes and anti-puncture tyres – Dual-piston hydraulic discs on 160 mm rotors give consistent, confident stopping in the wet, while the 20-inch anti-puncture urban tyres are made for potholes, gravel and the general state of British roads.

Step-through comfort and road-legal kit – A step-through aluminium frame and suspension fork make the Engwe O20 Boost easy and comfortable to live with, while EAPC compliance, K-Mark certified lights, a 15 kg rear rack and Find My tracking make it genuinely commuter-ready straight out of the box.

Electric Bike UK Laws

There are a few regulations surrounding electric bikes in the UK so we thought we would provide you with a summary of those below:

You must be aged 14 or over in the UK to ride an electric bike.

You do not need tax, insurance or a driving license to ride an electric bike.

To be classified as an electrically assisted pedal cycle (EAPC) in the UK, an electric bike must fulfil a certain set of criteria, including:

  • Pedals - The electric bike must have pedals capable of propelling it, and motor assistance should only be provided when the pedals are moving.
  • Motor - The motor’s power output must be no more than 250 watts (W).
  • Speed - The motor should not be able to propel the e-bike when it’s travelling faster than 15.5mph.

Please note that if your electric bike does not meet the above 3 points, then you cannot ride on public roads. Some of our bikes exceed the 250W limit, so these are only to be used on private land with the landowner's permission.

It is the responsibility of the rider to wear protective clothing, however this is not a legal requirement.
